Asbestos-related diseases take time to develop, usually, the first symptoms can arise between 10 to 40 years. These diseases sure are life-threatening but ultimately depend on the number of toxic asbestos fibres one has been exposed to. An individual having worked in natural asbestos deposits or working directly in contact with asbestos in industries will have a much larger risk of developing the diseases than someone who has had short-term or one-off exposure to the fibres. The fibres are dangerous as when entered into the human body will look to lodge onto various tissue lining and eventually burn through them exposing vital organs.

The symptoms of the various diseases all revolve around the same issues. Some of the symptoms are –

  • Shortness of breath or breathlessness
  • Slowly progressing cough and changing cough patterns
  • Coughing out blood
  • Acute pain in the chest or abdomen
  • Difficulty in swallowing and Loss of appetite
  • Face or neck swelling

The three major diseases that are directly related to asbestos are:

  • Asbestosis – This disease is a serious lung condition caused due to lung tissue scarring done by asbestos fibres. It is said that smoking can increase the rate of progression of asbestosis.
  • Mesothelioma – This disease is classified as a type of cancer that mainly affects the lining of the lungs. And in some cases, the linings on the heart or even testicles. Membranes of body cavities are formed and tumours then appear on these linings. In Australia alone, 641 people died of mesothelioma in 2014 as reported by the Australian Mesothelioma Registry. 80% of those being men aged between 60 to 80 years.
  • Lung cancer – Although a very small percentage of lung cancer is directly linked to asbestos, it is still one of the most fatal asbestos-related diseases.
